What is Oral Pathology?
Early detection is critical to maintaining your oral health and overall well-being. Oral pathology focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases, disorders, and conditions that affect the mouth, jaws, and surrounding structures. This can include issues with the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, and salivary glands. Our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Mark Tuffley, is specially trained to identify and manage a wide range of oral health problems, if necessary through a biopsy or similar procedure.
Providing an oral pathology service is an important part of our practice. Oral Pathology relates to the diagnosis and management of oral diseases of both the soft tissue areas of the mouth, tongue, lips, inside cheeks and the jaw bones. These can have a significant impact on your overall health, including your heart health and your gut health.

- Mucoceles
- Tori
- Cysts
- Papillomas
- Fungal Infections of the Mouth
- Lichen Planus
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCCs)
We take a thorough approach to our assessment including understanding your full medical history, clinical examination and medical imaging, where required. A small biopsy of the soft or bony tissue can be taken under either a local anaesthetic (awake, but no feeling to the area) or a general anaesthetic (asleep). This sample will be sent to a pathology laboratory for closer examination by an Oral Pathologist.
You will be issued with a separate account from the laboratory for these tests. You should be able to claim a rebate from Medicare for these fees (if you are the holder of a current Medicare Card).
The results will form part of the completion of our assessment and diagnosis. Then we will recommend the best course of treatment to get you back on the road to better health.
When to Make an Appointment
In many cases, changes in your mouth can be benign. However, they can also indicate a severe problem, such as advanced oral disease or cancer.
If you notice any of the following changes in your mouth or gums, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with our Surgeon.
Lumps or Bumps
If you discover any unusual bumps in your mouth, on your tongue, or along your gums, it’s essential to have them evaluated by a professional. These can be cysts or something more serious.
Persistent Sores or Ulcerations
Ulcers that don’t heal within two weeks could indicate an underlying issue. Our oral & maxillofacial surgeon can help determine the cause and provide appropriate treatment.
Unexplained Bleeding
If your gums bleed regularly when flossing or brushing, this is likely to be a sign of gum disease or other oral health problems may be present.
Pain or Discomfort
You should never ignore chronic pain or discomfort in your mouth, jaw, or throat, these issues should always be identified.
Changes in Colour or Texture
An Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon or an Oral Pathologist should examine any changes in the texture or colour of your oral tissues. This can include rough areas, white or red patches, or unusual discolouration.
What Does Oral Pathology Involve
Oral pathology involves a series of diagnostic procedures to identify and manage oral health issues. In some cases, we will take a biopsy to determine what is causing your symptoms.
The Biopsy Procedure
During the biopsy, we will carefully remove a small piece of tissue from the affected area. We use local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Then, we will send the collected sample to a laboratory for analysis.
Getting Your Results
Once the lab has processed the biopsy sample, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment or telehealth appointment to discuss your biopsy results with you. We will explain the findings and any recommended treatments or further evaluations.
